Yoga is a Sankrit word which means "to unite", "to yoke", or "union".  Through the practice of yoga, one unites the physical, mental, energetic, emotional, and spiritual levels of one's self.  It is belieded that through this union, an individual can improve and heal themselves.  This improvement occurs as one obtains more knowledge about themselves, and the needs of their body, mind and spirit.  From this knowledge, one can achieve and maintain a well-balanced physical, mental, and spiritual health.  Therefore, yoga represents a holistic science of self-improvement and healing.

A Well-Rounded Yoga Practice

By understanding the background and philosophy of yoga, one can develop a greater awareness of the subtle changes that can occur on and off the mat.  Therefore, a well-rounded yoga practice not only includes an understanding of the basic postures, breath work, and meditation, yet also a foundation in the principles of yoha.  At Lotus Center of Healing, LLC we strive to provide a brief education on one of these principles in the beginning of each class to enhance the students' experience.

Types of Yoga

Yoga is like a tree which has many branches.  Each of these branches presents a type of style of yoga.  At Lotus Center of Healing, LLC  we practice several forms of Hatha yoga which is one of the main branches of yoga.

Hatha yoga represents the yoga of physical well-being.  Most forms of yoga that are practiced in the United States fall under this category.  "Ha" in Sanskrit represents "sun", and "tha" represents "moom".  Therefore, Hatha yoga united the polarities or opposites within ourselves.  This is accomplished by combining asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breath), and meditative relaxations.
